Stop Identifying as “Stressed”
How often do you catch yourself saying, “I’m so stressed”? It might feel like a harmless statement, but the language we use has a powerful impact on how we see ourselves and experience life. When you identify as a “stressed person,” you’re reinforcing that identity every time you say it. The more you focus on stress, the more it defines you—and the harder it becomes to let go of it.
But what if you stopped identifying as a stressed person? What if you started focusing on who you want to be instead?
The Power of Language
Your words create your reality. When you tell yourself, “I’m always anxious,” or “Stress is just part of who I am,” you’re sending a signal to your brain to look for evidence that supports those beliefs. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, keeping you stuck in a cycle of overwhelm.
Now imagine shifting that narrative. Instead of saying, “I’m stressed,” you say, “I’m learning to handle challenges with calm and confidence.” Instead of, “I can’t relax,” you say, “I’m becoming someone who finds peace in every moment.”
This small shift in language can spark a profound transformation. By focusing on who you want to become, you’re giving your mind a new direction, training it to seek out opportunities for growth and change.
Who Do You Want to Be?
Take a moment to reflect. If you could step out of the “stressed person” identity, who would you be?
- A calm, grounded individual?
- Someone who handles life’s ups and downs with ease?
- A person who prioritizes peace and joy?
Start using language that aligns with this vision. Speak about yourself as though you’re already that person. It might feel strange at first, but over time, your brain will start to believe it—and your actions will follow.
Try It and Report Back
I challenge you to try this for the next week. Catch yourself whenever you use negative or stress- focused language and replace it with something positive and future-focused. Instead of saying,
“I’m overwhelmed,” try, “I’m finding ways to simplify my life.” Instead of, “I can’t handle this,” say, “I’m learning to navigate this with strength.”
Notice how it feels. Do you start to see small shifts in your mindset, your energy, or even how others respond to you? I’d love to hear how it goes—reach out and let me know!
